Overview

The Property Accounting Manager is responsible for the supervision, monitoring and evaluation of the day-to-day accounting activities including the ongoing development of staff.  The role will consist of collecting, analyzing, verifying and reporting financial information as well as other various accounting tasks.  The role will report to the Director of REIT Accounting. 

 

Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor the daily operations of accounting staff which includes but not limited to the accuracy of balance sheets, income statements, general ledgers, accounts receivable, accounts payable, property utilities, expense accruals, budgeting, forecasting, revenue and expense variance analysis, fixed assets, depreciation and amortization.
  • Review and analyze GAAP financial data and JV financial reporting to ensure accuracy and timeliness including the preparation and review of variance explanations.
  • Participate in various tasks of month-end and year-end close process which include but not limited to depreciation posting, fixed assets reconciliation, closing periods in accounting system.
  • Ensure timely review of JV debt service and property tax payments.
  • Prepare monthly JV cash flow reports for distributions.
  • Ensure proper accounting procedures, policies and principles are maintained and followed by staff.
  • Review and monitor bank reconciliations ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Prepare monthly master bank reconciliation.
  • Communicate with Community and Regional Managers regarding financial statement corrections and variance explanations.
  • Supervise and coach property accountants by learning accountant’s daily tasks.
  • Assist in maintenance of vendor payment system tools in conjunction with internal financial systems.
  • Participate and assist in audits.
  • Participate in ad hoc requests or tasks as needed by management.

Education:

  • Four year accounting degree or related degree is required.
  • Position requires the ability to proficiently and fluently read and write English.

 

Professional experience:

  • A minimum of 4 years’ experience as a manager or supervisor in the accounting field with a sound understanding of GAAP is required.
  • Accounting experience in multi-family (apartments) or commercial real estate is strongly desired.
  • Retail real estate accounting experience is desired.
  • Audit experience is desired.

 

Computer and application skills:

  • Proficient in MS Outlook, Excel, Word, Internet Explorer, web-based applications.
  • Proven ability to work proficiently in other accounting applications such as Yardi, MRI, JDE etc.

Skills:

  • Strong written and verbal communications.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Willingness to be flexible in responsibilities and work schedule.
  • Willingness to work in a team based environment.

Attendance/Travel Requirements:

The position requires the ability to work five days of the week, 52 weeks a year, in the office.  Must be flexible to work beyond 40 hours per week to meet deadlines required by management.  Minimal travel is required.
